In an industrial business, logistics begins long before there is a product to sell. It starts when raw materials arrive at the receiving dock and continues until finished goods leave for their destination. Between these two points lies a process that, if poorly coordinated, can bring an entire production line to a halt because of a simple supply delay.<\/p>\n

September is often the month when industrial activity picks up again after the August slowdown. It is also when bottlenecks emerge that were less apparent during the summer\u2019s lower production volumes. This makes it an ideal time to review whether inbound supply and distribution are truly aligned with production capacity.<\/p>\n

Inbound supply: the starting point that often gets reviewed too late<\/h2>\n

Inbound logistics manages the arrival of the raw materials, components and parts needed for manufacturing. Its purpose is not simply to ensure that materials arrive, but that they arrive at precisely the right time<\/strong> for production: neither too early, tying up capital in inventory, nor too late, bringing the line to a standstill.<\/p>\n

There are two main approaches, and most industrial businesses combine them according to the type of material:<\/p>\n
