For these and other reasons, <\/span><b>companies often decide to outsource their logistics management<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this article, we will first explain what a logistics operator is, what it does and discover the different types that exist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is a logistics operator?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let&#8217;s start with a definition: logistics operators are <\/span><b>companies that provide logistics services to a third party<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, enabling other companies to outsource their logistics. <\/span><b>They therefore stand between suppliers and end customers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The infrastructure of logistics operators changes according to the type of service offered or according to the size of the company. An operator working on a national level has different characteristics from those of operators integrated in a supply chain spread over several countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Types of logistics operators<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Logistics operators can be classified according to their area of specialization (always related to the supply chain). There are five types that can be categorized under the term Party Logistics (abbreviated as PL):<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>1PL <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(First Party Logistics): This is the first level of outsourcing. 1PL operators are only <\/span><b>responsible for the transportation and distribution of the contracting company&#8217;s products<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>2PL <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Second Party Logistics): The logistics operator<\/span><b> handles both the transportation and warehousing of the products<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These companies offer standard warehousing and transportation services, while the contracting company is responsible for fleet organization and material flow management. They are usually national logistics operators.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>3PL <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Second Party Logistics): in addition to infrastructure,<\/span><b> they organize and manage warehousing and transportation operations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. 3PL operators offer <\/span><b>tailor-made integrated services<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and, therefore, work under long-term agreements.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>4PL <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Fourth Party Logistics): act as highly specialized logistics consultants and work closely with the contractor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>5PL <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Fifth Party Logistics): they offer <\/span><b>integrated supply chain management and specialize in the optimization of complex operations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as the management of e-commerce-related goods flows.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Logistics operators are often the first to be confronted with changes in the industry. For this reason, they must continually adapt to the trends set by the market.
